Luka Doncic's Olympic debut was so spectacular, it sent the entire world digging into the record books. The Slovenian wonderboy scored 48 points and was well within reach of breaking the Games' scoring record of 55 points held by Brazilian Hall of Famer Oscar Schmidt in 1988.

And if anyone would like to see this record shattered, it's Mr. Schmidt himself.

"I’m a huge fan of Luka, not only because of his skills but also for the passion to play for his home country. If someone beats this record, I cheer for Luka," Schmidt said in a statement sent to BasketNews through the Brazilian basketball federation.

Schmidt was the top scorer in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games (42.3 points per game). He scored 55 points in a loss against Spain (110-118) on September 24, 1988. Brazil finished fifth in Seoul Olympics.

Having played in five Olympic basketball tournaments, Schmidt is also the all-time leading scorer of the Olympics (1093 points).

63-year-old Brazilian legend is also considered to be basketball's unofficial all-time leader in points scored, having put up 49,737 total career points in 1,615 games played (30.8 points per game).

Schmidt was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in September of 2013.

Doncic scored 48 points in his first game of the Olympics, as Slovenia beat Argentina 118-100 on Monday in Tokyo.
