Japan's basketball fans were in ecstasy Sunday evening in Okinawa when their national team shocked the world and came back from an 18-point deficit to defeat and eliminate Finland from the 2023 FIBA World Cup medal contention. 1.72-meter (5-foot-8) Yuki Kawamura was the hero down the stretch.

So far, the biggest upset of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 took place in Okinawa as Japan sensationally eliminated Finland, which will continue to fight for only 17-32nd places in the tournament. Despite a sluggish start and an early 7-15 deficit, Finland bounced back and even had an 18-point lead at the end of 3rd quarter.
2023-08-27
Finland had a gargantuan lead in the second half but it didn't matter for Japan. They won the fourth quarter by 18 points and eliminated Lauri Markkanen's team from FIBA World Cup title contention 98-88 (22-15, 14-31, 27-27, 35-15).
